Singer roasts Aussie fans over gig trend

Scottish superstar Lewis Capaldi is the guy whose music you’re hitting on repeat when you’re three boxes of tissues deep in heartache.
Someone You Loved, Before You Go, Wish You The Best: He’s got a ballad to soundtrack your break-up blues.
But the adored singer songwriter has enough love songs in his repertoire to inspire a trend that has taken over his Australian tour.
Capaldi’s gigs have become a proposal destination for loved-up fans since early 2023 when the cheeky troubadour invited two fans on stage at a Cardiff show for their big moment.
There’s already been at least two engagements during his Australian tour, which kicked off in Brisbane last week.
At his opening Australian show at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre last Thursday, two lovers in the mosh became engaged during Love The Hell Out Of You, prompting the Scottish star to heckle them for “taking the shine off me, and it’s my concert!”
The 29-year-old chart-topper, who is as celebrated for his self-deprecating humour as he is for his musical talents, offered his congratulations before joking “I’ll wait with bated breath for my invite to the wedding.”
He’s going to have to clear his 2026 calendar for wedding singer duties because at his next gig at Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena on Saturday night, another couple stole the spotlight with their romantic mid-show engagement.
The crowd started roaring and the cameras and spotlight usually trained on Capaldi switched to capture the pair in the middle of the proposal, which was then broadcast on the big screens flanking the stage.
Luckily the bride-to-be said yes and the pair shared a kiss and embrace to seal the deal after her future husband put a ring on it.
“That’s enough, put the cameras back on me,” Capaldi joked as the audience laughed.
“How dare you come here and propose! This is my show.”
Capaldi of course went on to congratulate the happy couple before advising them to “let me know when you’re going to do that because I thought someone had fainted.”
The award-winning singer quipped the proposal may have been a little triggering for the heartbroken members of his audience.
“There’s a lot of single, sad people at my shows as well, so you just f**king showed them what true love is and now almost 20,000 people hate you,” he teased.
“It’s f**kin’ great stuff, well done you guys.”
During the Sydney show, Capaldi declared his love for Australia and joy at being back on stage here after having to cancel his scheduled tour in 2023.
Capaldi took an extended time out after an emotional performance at the Glastonbury festival in June 2023, when his Tourette’s syndrome symptoms worsened during his performance and he struggled to continue.
In an amazing display of the human spirit, and love for the singer, the enormous crowd turned pub choir and finished singing Someone You Loved.
He returned to Glastonbury in June this year to a rapturous reception and delivered a superb performance which signalled the time off and treatment for his violent tics had restored his ability to perform live.
“This is my favourite country in the world to come and play a show,” he told the Sydney crowd on Saturday.
“Last time I was here was five years ago … I was supposed to come back in 2023 but I had to cancel because of my mental health, there were some issues … I won’t go on about it but I’ll talk about it for the rest of the show,” he quipped.
Capaldi’s tour continues to Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth this week.
