The Miami Heat and guard Tyler Herro received positive injury news on Saturday.
With Herro missing his first game because of what the team labeled as “right big toe irritation” in Friday night’s loss to the Magic in Orlando, an MRI on his injured toe Saturday revealed a right big toe contusion.
It’s not an issue that’s expected to keep Herro out for an extended period, but he will miss Saturday night’s matchup against the Sacramento Kings at Kaseya Center. The Heat has labeled Herro as day-to-day.
This is welcome news after Herro already missed training camp, the preseason and the first 17 games of the regular season following left ankle surgery in September. After returning to make his season debut last week, Herro played in just five games before being sidelined with this toe issue.
Herro hurt his toe early in Wednesday’s loss to the Mavericks in Dallas, colliding with Mavericks guard D’Angelo Russell while making a 6-footer and being fouled on an and-one play with 1:06 left in the first quarter. Herro went on to go scoreless in the second half after a 20-point first half
“I know about as much as y’all,” Herro said Friday when asked how he injured his toe. “I’m just day by day right now. Not really too sure what happened. I got a little soreness in my big toe. Obviously, I got kicked in like the first quarter the other night in the back of my calf. And then I woke up and my big toe was hurting.”
In the five games that Herro has played in this season, he has averaged 23.8 points per game while shooting 52.4% from the field and 15 of 31 (48.4%) on threes. He has started in all five games.
Herro, 25, can sign an extension with the Heat this upcoming offseason. He’ll be eligible to sign an extension worth as much as $206.9 million through four seasons during that window.
Herro, who was drafted by the Heat with the 13th overall pick in 2019, missed just five regular-season games to play in a career-high 77 regular-season games last season. But Saturday already marks the 19th game he has missed this season.
“I pray for him, man, because I know it’s tough on the mental,” Heat captain and three-time All-Star center Bam Adebayo said when asked about Herro. “Obviously, you fight your way throughout the summer. And then you have surgery, and then you come back, and then it’s another injury. So I know it’s tough on the mental. But as you know, we’re all family. We’re all here to be by his side and be with him as he gets healthy again.”
INJURY REPORT
Along with missing Herro, the Heat also ruled out Davion Mitchell (right groin tightness) and Pelle Larsson (right hip flexor tightness) for Saturday’s home game against the Kings on the second night of a back-to-back set.
The Heat also remains without Terry Rozier (not with team), Kasparas Jakucionis (G League), Myron Gardner (G League) and Vlad Goldin (G League) on Saturday.
The Kings ruled out Dylan Cardwell (G League), Daeqwon Plowden (G League), Domantas Sabonis (left knee partial meniscus tear), Dennis Schroder (right hip flexor strain) and Isaiah Stevens (G League) for Saturday’s game in Miami.
