Real Madrid vs Man City preview
Manchester City’s 2024-25 winter of discontent ended with a 6-3 aggregate defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League playoff round but City look in far better shape for Wednesday’s rematch.
They eased past Sunderland 3-0 in the Premier League on Saturday, turning up the heat on leaders Arsenal, and are a tempting price to claim a statement win over Real at the Bernabeu.
These rivals have been involved in some Champions League classics although Kylian Mbappe’s hat-trick swiftly snuffed out City’s hopes of a second-leg comeback in last term’s playoff tie.
Mbappe, like City’s Erling Haaland, has had a prolific start to the 2025-26 campaign, scoring 25 goals in 21 starts in La Liga and the Champions League.
However, the France forward was kept quiet by Arsenal, who beat Real 5-1 on aggregate in last season’s quarter-finals, and Liverpool, who were comprehensive 1-0 winners over the Spanish giants on matchday four.
Pep Guardiola made ten changes to his starting line-up on matchday five, when City suffered a shock 2-0 home defeat to Bayer Leverkusen.
Even so, the Germans scored with their only two shots on target and City responded with three straight league wins, scoring 11 goals against Leeds, Fulham and Sunderland.
While the Premier League side are almost back to their usual high standards after last season’s blip, Mbappe’s goals cannot cover up Real’s issues in their first campaign under Xabi Alonso.
Sunday’s 2-0 home defeat to Celta Vigo means they have won only one of their last five games in La Liga and they were outshot by Olympiakos in their most recent Champions League outing, a 4-3 win in Greece in which Mbappe scored all four goals.
Real edged past Marseille 2-1 and Juventus 1-0 in their first two European home fixtures and their defensive injury crisis boosts City’s hopes of a vital victory.
Foden fancied to test classy Real keeper
City’s resurgence is personified by Phil Foden, who has scored five times in his last three league appearances and notched twice in November’s impressive 4-1 Champions League win over Borussia Dortmund.
Foden scored a brilliant goal in the 3-3 draw with Real in April 2024 and is a tempting price to test Real goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who faced nine shots on target against Liverpool at Anfield.
Asencio set for tough night in depleted home defence
Real’s injury absentees include Dani Carvajal and Trent Alexander-Arnold so Raul Asencio, usually a centre-back, may have to fill in at right-back.
That would mean a battle with City’s in-form winger Jeremy Doku while Asencio will be up against Haaland if he starts at centre-back. Either way, the Spanish youngster merits a bet to receive the first card of the game.
