Club Brugge vs Arsenal preview

Arsenal are aiming to become just the second English team in history to win ten Champions League group games in a row when they visit Club Brugge tonight.

The Gunners were in imperious form in their last European tie, getting the better of fellow pacesetters Bayern Munich 3-1 in a dominant performance.

Things have been tougher since then however, with their 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa on Saturday meaning that Mikel Arteta’s side have taken four points from a possible nine in the league since their win over the Bavarians.

That has trimmed their lead at the top of the Premier League to just two points over Manchester City, although they remain the only team to have won all five of their Champions League games.

A defensive injury crisis has been at least partly to blame for Arsenal’s recent wobble, with first-choice central defenders Gabriel and William Saliba both absent, along with capable back-up Cristhian Mosquera.

Piero Hincapie and Jurrien Timber had to step in at the weekend as they conceded a last-minute winner to Unai Emery’s men.

However Arteta’s men are taking on a Club Brugge side who are in much worse condition than the Gunners.

Nicky Hayen was relieved of his duties as manager of the Belgians following a run of two wins from their last seven games in all competitions, including three defeats in their last four league games, which has seen them drop to third in the table.

Their Champions League efforts have not been much better, as the Blue-Blacks have taken just one point from their last four group games after an opening 4-1 win over Monaco.

New manager Ivan Leko faces a baptism of fire in his first game in charge and Arsenal should be too strong for their underperforming hosts.

However the Gunners’ injury crisis at the back is showing no signs of abating and Brugge should be able to cause them some problems on home soil.

Take both teams to get on the scoresheet in an Arsenal victory as their European dominance looks set to continue.

Gyokeres could recapture Champions League form

Viktor Gyokeres has been eased back from injury by Mikel Arteta but should lead the line for Arsenal in this one and the Swede is fancied to add to his tally of six goals from 13 starts in all competitions for the Gunners.

The former Sporting man has eight goals in 11 Champions League matches in total and looks a solid bet to add to that tally.

Brugge defence looks vulnerable

Club Brugge have struggled to keep their opponents out in recent weeks and they have leaked 13 goals in five Champions League matches.

Arsenal are a hard team to stop scoring and a 3-1 away win looks a tempting correct-score price.

Arsenal to win

Arsenal have been in red-hot form in Europe and should be able to get the better of a Brugge side who have lost three of their five Champions League games.

Raphael Onyedika to be booked

Brugge’s midfield enforcer has picked up five cards in all competitions this season and could attract the referee’s attention once more.

Christos Tzolis to have a shot on target

The Greek winger is Brugge’s biggest attacking threat, he is averaging 1.24 shots on target per 90 minutes this term and is fancied for another in this one.
