UVic ranks among Canada’s top research universities for 2025

The University of Victoria has once again secured its place among the country’s top research institutions.

Re$earch Infosource Inc has released its 2025 ranking of Canada’s Top 50 Research Universities, and UVic sits 18th nationwide while leading several major categories for mid-sized universities.

The annual ranking measures sponsored research income and research intensity, offering a detailed look at how competitive each university is when securing external funding.

UVic reported more than $168 million in research income during the 2024 fiscal year. That makes it one of the strongest performers in the “Comprehensive” tier, which includes universities with a broad mix of undergraduate and graduate programs.

Per faculty, the university brought in roughly 215 thousand dollars of research income, the highest intensity in its category. Graduate research support reached about 52 thousand dollars per student, placing UVic near the top of the national list for mid-sized institutions.

UVic’s research income increased by more than 20 percent year over year, one of the largest jumps in its tier. It also led all Comprehensive universities in international government research funding, securing just over $5 million from global sources.

Nationally, the 2025 analysis reports that research income across Canadian universities has grown to more than 10 billion dollars.

The University of Toronto, Université de Montréal and McGill University took the top three spots overall. The University of British Columbia ranked fourth and remains the highest placed institution in BC.

Other universities in the top 10 include Calgary, Alberta, Ottawa, Laval, McMaster and Saskatchewan.

Here on Vancouver Island, the ranking translates into real benefits. Strong research support helps UVic advance work in marine science, climate research, Indigenous studies and health.

It also brings new people, new ideas and new partnerships into the region.
