‘Down Cemetery Road’ Finale Episode 8 Recap: Is Amos Dead?

In episode 7 of Down Cemetery Road, Downey arrived on the island that he had once escaped from and was reunited with Dinah after shooting down Nev and Ty. He let Steph live because it was evident that she had formed a bond with Dinah, and he didn’t want to break that. When Downey noticed that Amos had reached the island, he used the tracker in Dinah’s teddy bear to stall Amos for a bit while he devised a way to escape with Steph and Dinah. Coincidentally, that’s when they ran into Zoe and Sarah, who had somehow made it to the island as well by hijacking a ferry and kidnapping its captain. As they were all taking a breather inside one of the many abandoned buildings, Amos opened fire at them, and one of the bullets struck Steph and killed her instantly. Downey decided that huddling in one place would make them an easier target. So, he told the ladies to take Dinah and get to his boat, which was parked on one of the beaches of the island, while he distracted Amos. That plan went sideways pretty quickly, as Amos killed Downey by slitting his throat. Realizing that Downey was dead, Zoe took up the task of keeping Amos engaged, which allowed Sarah and Dinah to escape to the boat. Zoe would have joined them too, but the part of the beach that she had to cross to get to Sarah and Dinah was laced with land mines. And once Amos realized that fact, instead of targeting Zoe from his perch with his sniper rifle, he shot at the ground to trigger the mines. He struck gold, and Zoe was flung several feet into the air and presumed dead. Sarah and Dinah had no choice but to escape to Firinn Village before Amos got to them. What happened next? Let’s find out.

Spoiler Alert

Zoe Is Alive

In episode 8 of Down Cemetery Road, it’s finally revealed that Hamza was casually waiting in Firinn Village so that he would only have to deal with the survivor of the gunfight on that island instead of being a part of said gunfight. He spots Sarah and Dinah arriving at the docks on Downey’s boat. Hamza conveys this information to C, who tells Hamza to kill both of them. Of course, he can’t shoot both of them in the head in the village square. So, he observes the duo from afar as they steal clothes and food from a store, whose owner is already talking to the police or someone else about Zoe (because she has been framed as a killer by Amos), and hide in an alley to freshen up. Once Dinah has gotten her bearings back, she inquires about Zoe. Sarah narrates a verbal eulogy for Zoe because she is so sure that the detective is dead. And then Zoe surprises them both by showing up in that alley. How did she get off the island, though? Well, Donny, the captain of the ferry, helped Zoe out. Yes, it seemed like Donny had abandoned the ladies, and maybe he had. But when the mines started going off, he apparently returned to the island and brought Zoe to Firinn Village. Donny, after giving back Sarah her bag that was in his ferry, advises Sarah and Zoe to go to the police and tell them what the English have been doing on that island. Since that’s impossible, given Zoe is a wanted killer, they put Donny’s suggestion on the backburner and part ways with him.

Zoe’s Documents Reach Talia

Zoe says that they should get out of the village before she is captured, and Sarah says that she has spotted a bus that’ll certainly take them far away from Firinn. But before boarding it, Sarah has this epiphany that they should, in fact, just surrender to the police and let them do the heavy lifting of getting to the bottom of this whole fiasco that they are messed up in. Zoe obviously advises against that, because if they are working against a massive government cover-up, then the police (PC Plum is a character in a show called Balamory, which is a show aimed at preschoolers) are the last place they should go. She has taken a gamble on DI Varma because, well, he is a detective, and it seems like he is somewhat interested in uncovering the truth. Sarah sees the light and decides to continue with their plan of boarding the bus and getting the hell out of Firinn. Hamza waits for a window of opportunity to get on the bus too without alarming his targets, because Zoe has crossed paths with Hamza once before at Janice’s house. When Zoe, Sarah, and Dinah are forced to duck underneath the seats to avoid getting seen one of the many cops patrolling the area in their cop cars, Hamza switches places with the driver and begins his journey to an isolated location where he can “finish them off.” Until the ladies realize that they are being tricked by Hamza, we get a brief scene between Varma and Cheski, where the former can be seen delivering the findings on the cover-up (as promised to Zoe) so that it can reach the Defence Secretary. Talia is understandably shocked to see the news about the fake deaths of the soldiers, the allegations about the manufacturing of chemical weapons (and their antidote), and more.

Hamza Doesn’t Want To Kill Dinah, Sarah, And Zoe

After reaching her workplace, Talia immediately confronts C and tells her to explain everything she has done prior to her appointment as defense secretary. C does not want to go into the details so that Talia has plausible deniability, because C predicts that if news of this whole controversy gets out, then it’ll be Talia who will need to deal with it, not C. He even says that he has “top government officials” working on keeping this secret buried. Yet, Talia demands some clarity, and that’s when C confirms all the allegations that have been leveled against him and his department. Talia is unable to fathom C’s nonchalance—which stems from the fact that he believes that he and his people were working on a game-changing medication for soldiers bearing the brunt of chemical warfare—and leaves the room because she can’t stand the sight of him. Going back to Scotland, Zoe and Sarah start to realize that something is off about their bus driver because he has not been picking up any passengers from any of the bus stands, and he is unwilling to stop even when he’s being asked to. In fact, Hamza is so busy taking the ladies away from the Scottish police that he doesn’t even pick up C’s call. Eventually, Zoe has no option but to get to the front of the bus and see what’s up, and she is understandably shocked to see Hamza. Before she can make head or tail of the situation, Hamza loses control of the vehicle, as its brakes have stopped working, and crashes into a cemetery. While Hamza is recuperating from the collision, Zoe and Sarah try to make a run for it with Dinah, but Hamza corners them and forces them at gunpoint to get into the church. Once he’s sure that he has the situation under control, he calls C for further instructions. C responds by reiterating his order to kill them all, but when he realizes that Hamza is hesitant about doing something so brutal, C puts him on standby. Hamza heaves a sigh of relief, because he thinks that C is planning on sparing the lives of all these innocent people. Little does he know that C is orchestrating something worse.

Amos Arrives With a Bang

While Hamza was busy chasing the three ladies and Talia was berating C for carrying out this illegal R&D operation, Amos was silently making his way back from the island to Firinn Village. His job was to kill Downey, and since he had achieved that objective, he discarded most of his stuff, stole a car, and was driving through the scenic landscape of Scotland. That’s when he got a call from C telling him to head over to the church (C has sent Amos the coordinates) and kill Sarah, Zoe, and Dinah. Amos says that he’ll need an incentive, and C points out that he has arranged for everything that he needs to start a new life; what else could Amos possibly want? Hamza’s life. After a few seconds of deliberation, C gives Amos the green light to kill Hamza along with the aforementioned targets, and Amos announces his arrival at the church with a bloody hand grenade. While the dust is still settling, Zoe, Sarah, and Dinah escape through the tunnel (which might’ve been for drainage purposes) underneath the church floor. Hamza comes to and slowly comes to the realization that Amos has been sent there not just to kill the witnesses; he’s there to kill him as well. So, Hamza pulls out his gun and points it at Amos, but he doesn’t have the courage to pull the trigger. While Amos is pushing Hamza to shoot him in the head, and Hamza is motivating himself to murder Amos, Dinah makes it out of the church and is unfortunately spotted by both Amos and Hamza. So, Hamza goes after Dinah, and since Amos spots Zoe in the underground tunnel, he captures her. Sarah is confused about who to protect, but Zoe urges her to go after Dinah (because she’s just a child), and Sarah goes off to save the kid from Hamza’s clutches. Since Hamza has a gun, Sarah goes to the bus to get her double-barrel gun from the bag, thereby somewhat leveling the playing field.

Amos Is Dead

Once Sarah catches up with Dinah and Hamza, she tells Dinah to run away while she deals with Hamza. Now, Hamza tries to convince Sarah that she has two choices: she can put down the gun, sign an NDA, and give up the kid, or she can kill him and spend the rest of her life looking over her shoulder. But it’s pretty obvious that Hamza is lying, because we all know he has been cut loose by C, and he is just trying to avoid getting shot in the face. He even goes so far as to throw away his gun. Sarah gives Hamza the benefit of the doubt and sets her gun down on the ground. What does Hamza do? He immediately picks up Sarah’s gun and pulls the trigger. The gun blows up in his hand—because the plugs in the barrel hadn’t been removed—and obliterates three of his fingers. Hamza falls to the ground, screaming in agony, and Sarah just stuffs a rag in his mouth, takes Hamza’s gun, and goes searching for Dinah. Parallel to this altercation, we get a battle of brain and brawn between Zoe and Amos. The mercenary obviously underestimates the geriatric detective and starts monologuing. He keeps throwing her around, and when he feels like he’s had enough, he begins choking her to death. Zoe remembers that she has a nail in her jacket pocket that Dinah had pulled out of one of the church pews and uses it to jab Amos in the eye. That causes Amos to stumble and hit his head on the church stairs, thereby killing him instantly. She reunites with Sarah and Dinah near the bus, but since the bus is inoperable, the ladies take Amos’ stolen car and head to the nearest train station. En route to their destination, Sarah throws away her engagement ring because, yeah, that relationship is as good as over. As they board the train headed to England, we get a brief glimpse of Hamza walking through some remote road in Scotland—he is bleeding out but still alive.

Zoe, Sarah, and Dinah Go Their Separate Ways

Zoe gets a call from Wayne, who informs her that he is ready to release the footage of Downey and his men getting doused with some kind of chemical by the English government, and Zoe gives him the green light to do so. While waiting for the digital bomb to drop, Zoe and Sarah talk about what they’ll do next in terms of their professional and personal lives. When they draw a blank, Sarah pulls out a couple of bottles of liquor, and she drinks with Zoe to Joe’s memory. Meanwhile, Talia gets busy shredding all of Zoe’s documents that had been provided to her by Varma via Cheski. C resigns from the Defence Ministry and enters the private sector, as he’s seen joining hands with a nameless businessman. Talia shows up for her scheduled appearance on the telly, where she is berated due to the English government’s involvement in an illicit chemical weapons test, and, instead of beating around the bush or deflecting from the matter at hand, Talia acknowledges the fact that such an operation shouldn’t have been greenlighted. She promises that, in her tenure, these kinds of mistakes won’t be repeated, and her office will do its best to help the families of the victims of those who have been affected by the previous regime. When she exits the studio and is about to head back to the office, she shares a quiet moment with Cheski, which seems like the calm before the storm that she is about to encounter. During the closing moments of the Down Cemetery Road episode 8, after reaching London’s Paddington Station (I think), Zoe hands over the bill for her services to Sarah, because technically she has been solving the case Sarah brought to Oxford Investigations. She informs Sarah that everything they have been through has been worth it because their work is in every headline across every news outlet in the UK. As promised, Ella (Downey’s sister) shows up to pick up Dinah, and as Sarah is parting ways with the little girl, Zoe takes their leave without even saying goodbye so that she can relax alone before the repercussions of her latest actions catch up to her.
