Martinelli on Champions League record and Jesus | Press conference | News

Gabriel Martinelli loves playing in the Champions League and the Brazilian is eying up a club record as we prepare to face Club Brugge in Belgium.

Gabi has scored in his last four Champions League appearances, netting against Athletic Club, Olympiacos, Atletico de Madrid and last time out in the 3-1 win over Bayern Munich.

If the Brazilian was to score against Club Brugge, he would become the first Gunner to net in five straight UCL contests. When asked about why he loves playing in the competition, he said: “I think in the Champions League, sometimes it’s a bit more open, the game. Everyone just wants to attack and have loads of space sometimes.

“In the Premier League, it’s a bit more tricky to score and to have more space. I’m really happy with the goals I’ve scored, helping the team and I hope to keep playing.”

Should Martinelli net over Brugge, he would be moving clear of his current teammate, Gabriel Jesus, who netted in four Champions League games in a row in the 2023/24 season.

Gabi Jesus has been working his way back to first-team action after suffering a knee injury against Manchester United in the FA Cup in January.

Jesus is one player Martinelli is delighted to see back and hopes his compatriot can return to the pitch as soon as possible.

Arteta on Jesus’s return and Dowman injury

He said: “I love him. I always say that he’s one of the best strikers in the world for me, so I’m really happy to have him back. Not just on the pitch, but outside the pitch as well, because normally when you’re injured, you don’t spend as much time with the team as if you are there.

“It’s really good to have him back and playing with him as well is really good. He loves to link up as well, to move and to rotate. I just hope he can have some minutes in the next games to show his talent again.

“He’s so experienced. He’s played so many games for Man City, for us, in the national team. He’s still young. I always say that to him, because I watched him since I was, I don’t know, 13 or 14, when he was at Palmeiras in Brazil, because he was 16 playing for the first team.

“So I always say to him that he looks older for me, because I always saw him when I was 13 or 14. But as I said, it’s really good to have him back and I’m really happy.”
