Team Canada’s list of players who could make their Olympic roster is down to the “lows 30s,” general manager Doug Armstrong told TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun.

Canada’s 4 Nations team was comprised of 13 forwards, seven defencemen and three goaltenders for a total of 23, with Drew Doughty of the Los Angeles Kings replacing Alex Pietrangelo in the weeks ahead of the event and Dallas Stars blueliner Thomas Harley joining as an injury replacement during the tournament.

Among the players not included on that roster who are making strong cases this season are young stars Macklin Celebrini and Connor Bedard, as well as Winnipeg Jets centre Mark Scheifele. Washington Capitals winger Tom Wilson is also reportedly on Canada’s radar, while Armstrong said last week that Boston Bruins breakout star Morgan Geekie is under consideration as well.

Jordan Binnington, Adin Hill and Samuel Montembault made up the goaltending group at the 4 Nations, with Binnington starting all four games. Capitals netminder Logan Thompson is having the strongest start among Canadian options this season with a 13-6-2 record with a .925 save percentage and a 1.96 goals-against average.

Forwards Sidney Crosby, Nathan MacKinnon, Connor McDavid, Brayden Point and Sam Reinhart have already been named to Team Canada’s roster, as well as blueliner Cale Makar.

Speaking to TSN.ca last month, Crosby said he expected a significant portion of the 4 Nations team to return for the Olympics.

“It’s a great group,” Crosby said. “I’m not sure what our team’s necessarily going to be but coming off the 4 Nations and that experience and getting to know a lot of you the guys on that team, I’m sure it’ll be fairly similar. I think you to see the hockey and the product that was on the ice and that should get everyone excited for the Olympics.”

Canada’s Olympic is roster is due to be submitted at the end of this month.
