First Alert Weather: Yellow Alert Thursday for lake snow & local travel impacts

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Wednesday saw an area-wide snow impacting much of our area, but Thursday will feature local lake effect snow. A Yellow Alert is up for Thursday for travel impacts in any lake snow bands. Colder air begins to rush back in Wednesday night, with any changeover back to snow not lasting more than a few hours, and nothing more than another inch or so of snow for all. As that colder air deepens and winds shift around, lake effect snow will begin to take shape off of Lake Ontario. In general, the lake snow will tend to focus along and north of Route 104, and especially into Wayne County. But, the band will likely shift around at times, and could possibly impact the immediate Rochester area. Some signs point to this snow affecting the morning commute. It is best to wake up a few minutes early and watch News10NBC Today with meteorologist Nate Morris for the latest check of radar and conditions.

Overall, the majority of our area will see a coating to an inch or two of additional lake snow on Thursday and Thursday night, with communities north of Rochester picking up another 3-6″, and parts of Wayne County a little more. This is through about lunchtime Friday, when the lake snows will come to an end. There will also be some areas of blowing snow with winds gusting to 30-40 mph, especially near the lake. If you’re not seeing lake snow, there’s a good chance you’ll see some blue sky and sunshine, but it’ll be blustery and cold with temperatures in the 20s and wind chills in the single digits.

Friday is much quieter once again, but chilly, with highs in the mid 20s. Another cold front plowing through over the weekend will drop our temperatures back into the teens for Sunday, along with some areas of lake effect snow making a return. Some additional accumulation is possible on Sunday, but looks fairly minor at this point. We’ll also be watching the potential for a storm along the east coast that could perhaps bring some snow to the Bills game at New England on Sunday.
