‘Twisty’ psychological thriller based on ‘phenomenal’ novel streaming soon

The series features stars from Shetland, Peaky Blinders and Line of Duty and takes its cue from a hit novel

A drama series, boasting an impressive British cast including Martin Compston, will be landing this week after it was teased by streaming platform Paramount+, after others have been watching a taut political series and a different crime drama.

The six-part series is adapted from a best-selling novel, which has been lauded by many fans after recently hitting bookshelves with readers unable to get enough of the dark tale.

One person gave it a five-star rating and titled their Amazon review: “A real page turner.” They said: “Great characters, excellent plot and so many twists and turns. Read it!!” While a second person hailed the novel as “phenomenal” and explained: “If you read one book before the year ends I 100% recommend this one!”

A third top-rated reviewer wrote: “A BRILLIANT dark and twisty psychological thriller and hands down one of my top reads of the year. Such an intriguing hook, masterful plotting, and an eclectic array of characters who get under your skin and will have you constantly changing your mind. Also loved the creeping sense of unease that builds to a tense and shocking finale.”

While a fourth person awarded the novel 5/5 and titled their review: “Hooked, gripping page turner!” They elaborated: “The final twist has me very much looking forwards to what’s more to come from this wordy, on trend author!” Another described it as an “excellent read” and said: “The only problem with this book is that it’s impossible to put down!! Totally hooked from the first page. Great plot. Loved it.”

The Othello Club by J.D. Pennington was published in October 2025 and follows a group of bitter divorcees, who are left seeking revenge for their heartbreak. The six strangers, who are part of a divorce support group, come from different backgrounds and carrying their own baggage with only their pain binding them together.

What originally starts out as pranks, including rat invasions and tarot card cons, soon escalates to a deadly accident and leaves the group with blood on their hands. The group begin to grow bolder in their plans and the line between justice and madness begins to blur – and someone might just take things too far.

The novel has been adapted into The Revenge Club by Paramount+ and features a stellar cast, including Shetland’s Douglas Henshall, Line of Duty actor Martin Compston, Aimee-Ffion Edwards from Peaky Blinders, Goodness Gracious Me star Meera Syal, Sharon Rooney from Black Mirror, Chaneil Kular from Sex Education, Happy Valley’s Amit Shah, and Jamestown actress Niamh Walsh.

Speaking about adapting the book for the small screen, author and executive producer Pennington said: “Obviously there was a divergence from the book and the TV series which is inevitable in the adaptation process. But the way I see it is the readers of my book will get one experience out of it, and then they’ll get a new experience out of watching the series, which is still true to the book, but there’ll be some new, unexpected twists and plot points that they can enjoy through that as well.” Pennington added: “Then of course anyone who hasn’t read the book it doesn’t make any difference, they can just enjoy the series.”

While screenwriter Gabbie Asher said about transposing the source text to the small screen: “I kept the brilliant central concept from the book, the six divorcees meeting and making a revenge pact. But beyond that, everything was created specifically for TV: the characters, the relationships and the way the story evolves because it does become something else and if anyone reads the book it’s fantastic, it would have been very difficult to take it as it is, for various reasons – I don’t want to do spoilers – but that would have been quite challenging.”

She continued: “So we tried to take as much of the essence as possible, and so rather than faithfully adapting every element it just used the concept as a launching pad to explore the themes of pain, betrayal and what people are capable of when they’re pushed to their limits.” Asher said how she had originally read the novel and the script for the TV show just came to her with every page. She ended up penning the script for episode one in just three weeks.

The Revenge Club will premiere on 12th December on Paramount+ UK & Ireland
