Important warning as payment dates change over Christmas period

Thousands of people will receive their regular social welfare payments paid out early in the run up to Christmas.

Payment dates are set to be adjusted over silly season due to banks and post offices being closed for a number of days over the festive period.

The Department of Social Protection confirm those receiving weekly payment will get their usual payment this week, commencing Monday, December 15, along with an advanced payment for the following week.

‘This applies to payments made at post offices, by cheque or directly in your financial institution account.’

Those receiving payment on January 1, should expect it on December 31.

Those on jobseeker’s casual or part-time payment are advised they need to issue dockets in advance to ensure payment continues over the festive period.

As many as 1.5 million benefited from the social welfare bonus, which saw the likes of lone parents, unemployed, carers, pensioners and those receiving disability getting the bonus.

Announcing the arrangements last week, Social Protection Minister Dara Calleary admitted he was ‘very conscious of the pressure families are under, particularly in the run up to Christmas.’

He said: ‘The Christmas Bonus is a vital support, particularly for our senior citizens. That’s why I am pleased to announce the details of the Christmas Bonus payments today.’

Payments totaling €370m started being issued last Monday, December 1, with those receiving the bonus getting it on the same day they usually receive their primary payment.

There is no bonus in respect of the child benefit, however, those in receipt of VTOS or Youthreach training allowance for at least 12 months will also be eligible for the Christmas bonus.
