Ryan Reynolds has been in the headlines again this week after selling a minority stake in Wrexham to major investors. It came as the club is valued at a staggering £350m following its transformation under the Hollywood actor and Rob McElhenney.
Reynolds and McElhenney sold part of the club to Apollo Sports Capital (ASC) as they look to the future after a remarkable first four years. The duo have ploughed in millions of their own money so far, but were able to be repaid £15m of loans by the club this year as it goes from success to success.
The presence of such a high profile owner has seen the club’s value and reputation soar since 2021 and marks the latest business success of Reynolds’ life.
Wrexham were bought by the two actors from the Wrexham Supporters Trust for a nominal fee in February 2021. They have since achieved three consecutive promotions under manager Phil Parkinson, climbing from the National League into the Championship.
In a joint statement as part of the latest announcement, Reynolds and McElhenney said: “From day one, we wanted to build a sustainable future for Wrexham Association Football Club. And to do it with a little heart and humour.
“The dream has always been to take this club to the Premier League while staying true to the town. Growth like that takes world-class partners who share our vision and ambition, and Apollo absolutely does.”
It’s been a remarkable journey for Reynolds as he’s amassed a colossal fortune that stretches far beyond his acting career. This is his story in life, love and business so far.
From modest beginnings to Hollywood superstar
Ryan Reynolds was born in October 1976 in Vancouver, British Columbia, as the youngest of four brothers in an Irish Catholic family. At the tender age of 13, he developed a passion for acting and began securing roles in various television shows, including the Canadian series The Odyssey and Nickelodeon’s Hillside.
After landing minor parts in several series, Reynolds’ big break came with the 2002 National Lampoon film Van Wilder, signalling the start of his rise to stardom. Despite a few early cinematic ventures that fell short, he found his footing in Hollywood through successful romcoms such as Just Friends, Definitely, Maybe and The Proposal.
His leading role in the DC superhero film Green Lantern was met with widespread criticism, with the film becoming one of the most notable box-office disasters in cinema history. However, he bounced back with the blockbuster hit Deadpool, which grossed an impressive $782.6million on a budget of just $58million, making it one of the highest-grossing R-rated films ever.
The sequel was equally well-received, and more franchises have since followed.
Net worth
Reports suggest that the 49-year old actor currently has a net worth of $400-450m, bolstering his Hollywood career with astute entrepreneurial and investment endeavours.
Beyond his box office triumphs, Reynolds has been active in the boardroom over the past five years or so, acquiring up to a 20 per cent stake in Portland-based Aviation Gin and turning it into a recognised brand on both sides of the Atlantic. Drinks giant Diageo acquired the company in 2020 in a deal valued at just over $600million.
A few years ago, he made a significant profit when he sold his substantial stake in telecoms company Mint Mobile to T-Mobile. The deal, valued at $1.35 billion, netted him an impressive $300 million plus.
It’s believed that Reynolds earns up to £100m a year from acting alone, with much of his success stemming from the Marvel blockbuster hits Deadpool and Wolverine. His family film IF and documentary Welcome to Wrexham are also thought to have contributed significantly over the past few years.
Reynolds and McElhenney have invested over £20m into Wrexham but have seen a substantial increase in the club’s turnover. They’re also benefiting from an additional £8m in television revenue due to promotion to the Championship.
High-profile relationships and Hollywood divorce
Reynolds has had a series of high-profile relationships, including engagements and marriages to some of the world’s most famous women.
In 2004, he became engaged to fellow Canadian Alanis Morissette, whom he met at Drew Barrymore’s birthday party two years earlier. Despite parting ways in 2007, with Morissette attributing the pressures of fame as a contributing factor, they have remained close friends.

After his split from Morissette, Reynolds began dating actress Scarlett Johansson, and the couple married in a private ceremony in Vancouver the following year. However, their A-list status and busy schedules led to a short-lived marriage, and they separated in 2010.
Johansson, who was 23 when they wed, reflected Reynolds’ view that the relationship broke down due to insufficient time spent together, revealing to Time Out: “We work and then go home – I’d just stare at the wall for a few hours before I got to sleep.”
Reynolds has also been romantically connected to actresses Sandra Bullock, Melissa Joan Hart, and Charlize Theron.
Finding Love with Blake Lively
Reynolds’ luck turned around when he encountered Gossip Girl star Blake Lively during filming of Green Lantern, and romance blossomed. The pair married in 2012 and have since established themselves as one of Hollywood’s most cherished celebrity couples, raising four children together.

Reynolds and Lively said their vows during an intimate ceremony in South Carolina, though they have subsequently voiced remorse about their venue choice, Boone Hall Plantation in Mount Pleasant, which carries a legacy of slavery. The duo attracted backlash for romanticising the location and offered a sincere apology, declaring they were “deeply and unreservedly” sorry for their decision.
The pair later held a second, private wedding ceremony at their residence, though the precise date remains undisclosed. They are recognised for their playful banter with Wrexham supporters, with Lively once suggesting to a fan at the Racecourse Ground that she should dump her boyfriend, whilst Reynolds jokingly cautioned player Ollie Palmer to “put a shirt on” when his wife was present.
