Tilak Varma entered his name in the history books on Tuesday (December 9) by becoming the first Indian batter to score 1000 runs in T20Is before turning 25. The left-handed batter from Hyderabad, who came out to bat at No. 4 for India in the ongoing first T20I against South Africa at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack, needed four runs to complete 1000 runs in T20Is, and he achieved the objective during the sixth over of India’s innings. On the third ball he scored a boundary off Marco Jansen’s bowling to join the 1000-run club.
Tilak, who made his T20I debut in August 2023 against the West Indies, is 23 years and 31 days old. He is the 13th Indian to score 1000 runs in T20Is.
Before Tilak, the youngest Indian to score 1000 T20I runs was Abhishek Sharma. Abhishek was 25 years and 65 days old when he scored his 1000th T20I run for India on November 8, 2025, in Brisbane against Australia.

Virat Kohli was 26 years and 331 days old when he joined the 1000-run club in T20Is for India on October 2, 2015, in Dharamsala against South Africa. KL Rahul completed 1000 T20I runs at the age of 27 years and 232 days, and Rohit Sharma scored his 1000th T20I run at the age of 29 years and 276 days.
The ongoing India-South Africa T20I in Cuttack is Tilak’s 37th match for India in the shortest format of the game, and he is now the 5th fastest batter (in terms of matches) to score 1000 runs in T20Is for the Men in Blue.

Tilak has scored two centuries in his last two T20I matches against South Africa, and if he manages to score one more century in the ongoing series against the 2024 T20 World Cup losing finalists, then he will become the second player from Test-playing nations to score three T20I centuries against the same opponent.
