Ferencvaros vs Rangers preview
While there has been a significant improvement in Rangers’ domestic form since Danny Rohl replaced Russell Martin as manager, the scale of the work the German still has to do is demonstrated by his team’s Europa League record.
The Gers have scored just twice in five league-stage outings and a 1-1 home draw with Braga in their most recent match is all they have to show for their efforts, so facing Ferencvaros, who have yet to taste defeat, looks daunting.
The Glasgow outfit have already lost to Sturm Graz and Brann on the road – their 3-0 loss in Norway came a few days after Rohl’s appointment – but a 2-0 defeat to Roma, who are fourth in Serie A, has been their only defeat in their last nine.
So there may be cause for optimism, and their hosts’ defensive record should give them some encouragement when they head to Budapest.
Robbie Keane’s side have yet to taste defeat in the competition, but while they are at the top of their domestic standings, they have conceded 17 goals in their 16 matches.
They head into this clash having kept clean sheets in their last two league games, both of which were against Kisvarda, but their defences were broken in their ten previous outings.
They have conceded in ten of their last 11 home games, so there is a realistic chance we could see goals at both tends and it is worth providing a boost to the price by teaming it up with a total of at least three.
Gers have to keep Vargas in check
For Rangers to enjoy a successful trip to Budapest it will be essential for them to keep a close eye on Ferencvaros striker Barnabas Varga.
The centre forward has scored three goals in this season’s Europa League campaign, while he was on target six times in Ferencvaros’s unsuccessful Champions League qualification attempt and has also scored ten times in the Hungarian top flight this term.
