Arshdeep Singh is India’s highest wicket-taker in T20Is, and the 26-year-old left-arm pacer is also leading the team’s bowling attack in the second T20I against South Africa at Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, New Chandigarh, on Thursday (December 11). But in the first-ever T20I match at Mullanpur, Arshdeep equalled an unwanted record of bowling the most balls in an over.

In his third and South Africa’s 11th over of the innings, Arshdeep rolled his arm a total of 13 times. He bowled seven wides and got smacked for one six to concede a total of 18 runs.

Afghanistan’s Naveen-ul-Haq also bowled a 13-ball over against Zimbabwe in Harare last year.

Most balls bowled in an over in T20Is

  • 13 – Naveen-ul-Haq (Afghanistan) vs Zimbabwe, Harare (2024)
  • 13 – Arshdeep Singh (India) vs South Africa, Mullanpur (2025)
  • 12 – Sisanda Magala (South Africa) vs Pakistan, Johannesburg (2021)

Arshdeep, who picked up a couple of wickets in the first T20I for India on Tuesday, failed to create the same impact on Thursday. He got smacked for a six in the first over by Quinton de Kock (90), and in his second over as well, De Kock scored a six against him on the third ball.

De Kock on fire

After failing to open his account in the series opener, De Kock roared back to form on Thursday and scored 90 runs from 46 balls as an opening batter. During his stay at the crease, he hammered five fours and seven sixes against the Suryakumar Yadav-led side. De Kock added 83 runs for the second wicket with captain Aiden Markram (29 runs from 26 balls).

De Kock was unlucky to miss out on a deserving century in the 2nd T20I. On the first ball of the 16th over of South Africa’s innings, Jitesh Sharma showed brilliant glovework to end his innings.

3 changes for SA

For the second T20I, the Proteas have three changes to their playing XI. Tristan Stubbs, Keshav Maharaj and Anrich Nortje are not playing in the ongoing match, and they are replaced by Reeza Hendricks, George Linde and Ottneil Baartman in the playing XI.
