Deontay Wilder reveals Oleksandr Usyk talks over shock heavyweight fight with timeframe set

Deontay Wilder has revealed that discussions are actively progressing for a blockbuster heavyweight encounter with Oleksandr Usyk.

The American knockout artist spoke exclusively to talkSPORT whilst attending the 2025 IBA Men’s Boxing World Championship in Dubai.

The 40-year-old, known as the ‘Bronze Bomber’, confirmed that both parties have reached the negotiating stage for what would be one of the most commercially significant bouts in recent heavyweight history.

Wilder’s announcement comes ahead of the Pulev versus Gassiev contest, with the former WBC champion expressing genuine enthusiasm about the prospect of facing the Ukrainian star.

Speaking to talkSPORT’s White & Jordan programme, Wilder offered a candid assessment of where matters currently stand.

“It is definitely becoming a real conversation,” he stated. “Boxing is a business but sometimes it falls through, right now we are in talks for that fight, yes.”

The former world champion made clear his anticipation for the potential showdown.

“I’m excited and looking forward to it. Once I get the final say-so and details, then my blood will be pumping,” Wilder added.

He confirmed that training preparations would commence once contractual matters are finalised: “Once things become clearer, that is when I can go to camp.”

Usyk reclaimed his status as undisputed heavyweight champion following his victory over Daniel Dubois in July.

The Ukrainian subsequently relinquished his WBO belt after receiving mandatory orders to defend against Fabio Wardley.

This decision afforded Usyk complete freedom in selecting his next opponent, and he opted to challenge Wilder directly.

The call-out caught many observers off guard, with expectations that Usyk might instead pursue a third meeting with Tyson Fury or face a top-ranked contender.

Wilder has secured just a single victory since 2023, prompting some to suggest retirement.

Nevertheless, representatives from both fighters have acknowledged shared interest in finalising the contest for 2026.

Wilder expressed a measured response to Usyk’s public challenge, suggesting he had anticipated such interest.

“I wasn’t surprised, I was 50/50,” he remarked. “I never get opportunities, no-one gives me chances especially coming up because of the power.”

The American reflected on the paradox of his career trajectory: “The power gets me less chances, and after the losses, people get brave and confident.

“It is crazy that you get more chances when you lose, when I was at the top and knocking people out, I didn’t get chances.”

Regarding venue and timing, Wilder declined to elaborate on specifics during his talkSPORT interview.

Las Vegas remains a logical destination given his considerable American following, though any bout would likely occur no earlier than mid-2026.
