Glen Powell’s $90 Million ‘Top Gun’ Replacement Soars on Streaming After ‘Chad Powers’ Renewal

Glen Powell fans are riding high after Hulu announced that a second season of Chad Powers is in the works, but before he returns as the football star, one of his forgotten projects has returned to the top of streaming charts. Before he played Hangman in Top Gun: Maverick, Powell starred alongside former MCU star Jonathan Majors (Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania) in Devotion, the 2022 war biopic following a pair of pilots who risk their lives during the Korean War. Devotion is streaming on HBO Max globally, where the film is soaring into the top 10 in several countries, including Denmark, Finland, and more.
While most fans understandably remember Powell for his role in Top Gun: Maverick, Devotion is when he first captured the hearts of fans in his flight suit. The film was beloved by both critics and audiences upon release, earning a Certified Fresh 81% from critics and a Verified Hot 92% from audiences on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes. The strong reviews didn’t translate into financial success, though. Devotion had a production budget of $90 million, yet the film grossed only $21 million worldwide. It’s Powell’s biggest underperformer to date, but his new movie is venturing into the same territory.
Devotion is based on the novel of the same name by Adam Makos, and Jake Crane worked with Jonathan Stewart on the script for the film. J.D. Dillard directed Devotion, and it’s easily the most famous work of his career. Dillard has not stepped back behind the camera in the three years since Devotion hit theaters, but his name is attached to several upcoming projects that are in development, such as, Mastering Your Past, Neuromancer, and The Strange.
Glen Powell’s Running Man is Destined to Become a Flop
Glen Powell’s new action vehicle comes in the form of The Running Man, which is a remake of the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger action movie of the same name. It’s clear that plenty of money went into the Stephen King remake — the production budget alone is $110 million — but the film has only grossed $60 million at the box office at the time of writing. It’s running right towards flop territory, as it boasts a break-even point of over $200 million. It likely won’t even reach $100 million before the end of its run.
Devotion is not streaming anywhere in America, but be sure to check out the film on VOD platforms like Prime Video and stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates.
