Yakuza creator Toshihiro Nagoshi’s new game looks a lot like Yakuza

Yakuza series creator Toshihiro Nagoshi showed off the first trailer for Gang of Dragon, his first project at Nagoshi Studio, during The Game Awards 2025. The reveal comes nearly four years after Nagoshi left Sega and Ryu Ga Gotoku to start his own studio under NetEase.

The trailer starts with a scene of normal daily life — normal, for a Nagoshi game anyway. Two men are fighting in the street, one pulls out a knife and stabs the other in the stomach. The victim — played by none other than legendary Korean brick shithouse Don Lee — grabs the knife and digs his hands into it before the scene changes. The same knifed man, now without a blade in his belly, is making a phone call in a bar when yet more aggressors show up, this time armed with guns. As you might expect from someone who survives a stabbing and other horrific bodily harm, our hero isn’t especially fazed by the provocation (or a guy getting shot in the head) and walks away unharmed.

There’s another slick montage of fighting scenes before the as-yet unnamed protagonist walks under the Kabukicho sign — which you also might recognize from the Yakuza series — and the title card pops. The lead character seems a bit more hot-headed and reckless than Kazuma Kiryu and rather more seasoned than Ichiban Kasuga, but it’s all very Yakuza, arguably more so than RGG’s new game, Stranger than Heaven.

The Game Awards showrunner Geoff Keighley said the trailer footage was all in-engine, but Gang of Dragon has no release date yet.
