Tate McRae reflected on how the public reacted to her relationship with The Kid LAROI.

In a cover story with Rolling Stone published on Thursday, Dec. 11, the pop star opened up about how the lack of privacy surrounding their romance and subsequent breakup impacted her.

“It was really scary and overwhelming,” McRae, 22, told the publication. “I would never talk that way, even about my friends’ lives. I didn’t realize how much it would affect me, the public knowing my private life — because no one knows the full story of anything, ever.”

She also noted that she hated that people were “painting a situation that’s worse than it is.”

However, McRae is realistic about the career both she and and the Australian singer and rapper, 22, have.

“What I’ve had to realize is that he’s going to write songs and I’m going to write songs, and that’s our way of expressing ourselves. That’s our art, that’s our job. And once it’s out there, it’s not mine anymore,” said the “Tit for Tat” hitmaker.

In the Rolling Stone story, McRae also confirmed that her breakup with The Kid LAROI happened in June.

Three months after their split, the “Purple Lace Bra” musician released the song “Tit for Tat,” which fans speculated was a response to The Kid LAROI’s track “A Cold Play,” which he dropped the same month.

On “A Cold Play,” The Kid LAROI sings “Fix you, I wish I could,” while McRae sings, “Fix your f—–‘ self!” on “Tit for Tat.”

In January 2024, McRae and The Kid LAROI initially sparked romance rumors when the former shared a certain mirror selfie on Instagram.

The Kid LAROI then added to the speculation, commenting the sunglasses emoji on the post.

The pair were then spotted together a handful of times in the coming months, including walking out of a dinner date in Los Angeles to holding hands at the 2024 NHL All-Star Game in Toronto.

In April 2024, The Kid LAROI appeared to confirm their relationship during one of his concerts, telling the audience that “his girlfriend” was at the gig — which McRae was watching from backstage.

The “How Does It Feel” performer seemingly confirmed his split from McRae in July when he shared a screenshot of an interaction with someone who appeared to be on his team on X, seemingly confirming he and the “Sports Car” singer broke up after first sparking dating rumors in early 2024.

In response to a fan accusing his team of “paying for slander tweets” against McRae, sharing lyrics from his single “Hot Girl Problems,” The Kid LAROI denied that he had anything to do with the situation.

“so yall know I have NOTHING to do with this and I DO NOT co sign this behavior whatsoever. working to get these removed,” he wrote at the time, sharing an apparent tweet accusing his team of shading McRae.
