Tyler Shough could set a couple Saints franchise records for rookie quarterbacks this week

New Orleans Saints quarterback Tyler Shough could etch his name into the franchise record books in a couple different spots this weekend against the Carolina Panthers.

Because the Saints have not traditionally turned to rookie quarterbacks in starting roles, several franchise records for rookie quarterbacks are within range for Shough despite the fact that he is in line to make his sixthth career start.

He needs 106 passing yards to break the Saints rookie passing yards record, which was set last season by Spencer Rattler (1,317). Shough also needs two touchdowns to break Archie Manning’s record (6), set back in 1971.

Technically, both of those records could be claimed by Aaron Brooks (1,514 yards and 9 touchdowns), who made his NFL debut in a Saints uniform in 2000. But Brooks was not a rookie, having spent the start of his career with the Green Bay Packers.

Including Brooks and Bobby Hebert, who began his professional career in the USFL, only six first-year quarterbacks have ever attempted more than 100 passes in a Saints uniform.
