The Street Fighter movie gets radical first trailer that’s way over the top

The Game Awards gave up its stage for a fighting tournament Thursday night, when the assembled cast of Street Fighter — except Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson (Balrog) for some reason — took to the show to drop the first trailer for the upcoming film and it looks amazing.

The clip, which you can see above, introduces so many characters that you’ll probably lose track. What you should notice, though, is the tongue-in-cheek humorous tone the movie seems to be going for. Even Guile, as portrayed by reigning WWE Champion Cody Rhodes, has his ridiculous hairstyle and executed a perfect flash kick.

The color palette used is clearly a nod to the 1991 arcade game hit that defined the fighting game genre with Street Fighter 2. Plus, we already know that the movie will be set in 1993, setting the stage for a perfectly nostalgic take on Street Fighter. It looks big, bright, and sort of silly. It doesn’t look like a movie that’s going to take itself too seriously. And let’s be honest, isn’t that exactly the kind of Street Fighter movie you want?

The assembled cast included Noah Centineo (Ken Masters), Andrew Koji (Ryu), Jason Momoa (Blanka), Roman Reigns (Akuma), Callina Liang (Chun-Li), reigning WWE champion Cody Rhodes (Guile), David Dastmalchian (M. Bison), Andrew Schulz (Dan Hibiki), Vidyut Jammwal (Dhalsim), Eric André (Don Sauvage). Orville Peck (Vega), Olivier Richters (Zangief), Hirooki Goto (E. Honda), and Mel Jarnson (Cammy). In a funny moment, the cast also called out the actors starring in the upcoming Mortal Kombat 2 for not also being there at the show.

Of course, this isn’t the first Street Fighter movie. There have been a couple live-action films based on the franchise, though none as notorious as the 1994 original film, which saw Jean-Claude Van Damme play Guile, while Raul Julia brought M. Bison to life in his final movie role.

This was just the first taste of the new Street Fighter movie. The movie isn’t in theaters until Oct. 16, 2026, so you have almost a year to let the anticipation build.
