“All I Want For Christmas Is You” by Mariah Carey at number 1 ahead of “Last Christmas” by Wham!: once again, the old Christmas hits are storming the Swiss singles charts.
A total of seven of the top ten places are about the Christmas tree, the longed-for snow or Christmas itself. Even superstar Taylor Swift, who fell from first to third place on Sunday with “The Faith Of Ophelia”, has to give in.
First place in the singles chart in December has for years belonged unchallenged to Mariah Carey with her Christmas hit from 1994. “All I Want For Christmas Is You” has so far spent 23 weeks at number one in Swiss chart history – that is more than any other artist has ever managed outside of the Christmas period.
It’s also more than Wham! with “Last Christmas”, who never made it to the top and had to settle for the perpetual second place. The song has remained in second place for 16 weeks since its release in 1984.
Also in the top ten are Brenda Lee with “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree” at number 4 as well as Sia with “Snowman”, Ariane Grande with “Santa Tell Me”, Dean Martin with “Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!” and Bobby Helms with “Jingle Bell Rock” in places 6 to 9.
