McCain Australia issues nationwide recall on 400g packets of cheese and bacon pizza pockets after plastic find

McCain Australia has announced a nationwide recall after plastic was found in one of its popular microwave pizza snacks.

A consumer made the unsettling discovery inside a cheese and bacon pizza pocket, and there are concerns some products may also be contaminated with metal.

The recall relates to 400g packets with the batch code “1005481714” (not “10054869945” as McCain originally said) and best before dates marked “October 2026 289”, “October 2026 290” or “October 2026 291”.

The microwave meals have been sold at Woolworths, Coles and independent retailers, including IGA, nationally and online.

McCain told 7NEWS.com.au that while no metal was identified by the consumer, “we are approaching this with caution and not ruling out that small traces of metal may also be present”.

Consumers should bin the product or return it to the place of purchase for a refund.

Importantly, you should not eat them.

“Food products containing plastic and/or metal may cause illness/injury if consumed,” Food Standards Australia and New Zealand said in an alert for the pizza pocket recall.

“Any consumers concerned about their health should seek medical advice.”

McCain, a frozen food producer with facilities in Victoria and Tasmania, said it takes food safety seriously and apologised for the inconvenience.

“McCain is working closely with food safety authorities and retailers to ensure the recall is carried out quickly and thoroughly,” the company said.
