Near North Director of Education resigns amid controversy

The Near North District School Board, in a memo to staff, says the Director of Education, Craig Myles, has resigned.
Myles has come under heavy criticism from Education Minister Paul Calandra recently regarding his job performance and his family’s use of a corporate credit card. He was “on leave” before resigning today.

The memo, which has been shared within the Parents of Parry Sound Facebook group, states that Myles joined the Near North Board in August of 2014 as Superintendent of Student Success, “bringing more than 20 years of experience” in education.
He was named director in January of 2020 and retired with over 30 years in the education field.
The Education Ministry’s report was a scathing review revealing widespread dysfunction within the Near North District School Board (NNDSB), citing a breakdown in governance, leadership failures, and eroded public trust.
Jay Aspin, who was Board Chair before the provincial takeover, told BayToday, “Our board, we were working towards that, and if it’s official, that’s good. We’ve accomplished what we wanted to accomplish.”
Aspin says the resignation doesn’t come as a surprise.
“It doesn’t to us. We knew which way it was heading, and it was just a matter of time.”
BayToday reached out to the communications department at the Near North District School Board, which has been part of the lack of transparency complaint by Calandra. They initially declined to comment on the matter, but later Thursday afternoon, they confirmed the retirement.
We also reached out to Calandra. A representative from the minister’s communications department said the minister had no comment on the matter.
BayToday will update this story.
