As a result of the trade, the Oilers don’t have a third-round pick in 2027. They have six picks in that draft, though they don’t have one in the fourth round, either.
Stastney has spent the entirety of his young NHL career with the Predators, the team that took him in the fifth round, 131st overall, of the 2018 draft. After finishing up his college career at Notre Dame, the Woodbridge, Ill. native joined the pro ranks, spending time with both the Predators and their American Hockey League affiliate, the Milwaukee Admirals.
After splitting his first three pro seasons between the NHL and minors, Stastney started the 2025-26 season as a full-time NHLer for the first time. In 30 games thus far, he has notched a goal and eight assists for nine points, already career highs. He has a plus/minus of -1 while averaging just under 15 minutes of ice time per game.
Stastney is in the final season of his two-year contract, which carries an AAV of $825,000.
In 81 career NHL games, Stastney has scored three goals and 15 assists for 18 points. He also played three games for Smashville during their postseason run in 2024.
It wasn’t the only trade the Oilers made on Friday. The team also traded goaltender Stuart Skinner, defenseman Brett Kulak and a 2029 second-round pick to the Pittsburgh Penguins for goaltender Tristan Jarry and forward Samuel Poulin.
With the pair of trades, the Oilers now have a little over $1.7 million in cap space, according to PuckPedia. The Predators have close to $9.5 million to play with.
The Oilers (14-11-6) currently sit fourth in the Pacific Division, holding the first Wild Card spot in the Western Conference. The Predators (12-14-4) are last in the Central, five points back of eighth place in the West.
