Kelsey Grammer Details Complicated Avengers: Doomsday Filming, Talks Reunion With Patrick Stewart

Avengers: Doomsday is only a year away from its big release, as the Marvel Cinematic Universe gets ready for Victor von Doom’s war against the iconic heroes. As Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom is the true threat of The Multiverse Saga, superheroes across realities will be coming together, including Fox’s X-Men.

ScreenRant’s Ash Crossan recently interviewed Kelsey Grammer for his new film, Turbulence, where he also spoke about coming back as Beast for 2026’s Avengers: Doomsday. When asked about reuniting with his X-Men co-stars, he explained, “I haven’t really been able to keep up [laughs]” when it comes to the larger growth of the MCU franchise. While saying that “some of it I’m aware of;” there are “others I’m like, “Well, I don’t know.” But it was a presumptive joy to join in, to be part of it again.”

Grammer, who debuted in X-Men: The Last Stand back in 2006, continued by sharing how “there are people with a lot of different characters now – more than when I was first part of the X-Men thing.” As Sir Patrick Stewart is back to play Professor X, “[he] and I are old pals. Patrick got – I think he got an Emmy for a role he did on Frasier. We’re good friends.”

To Grammer, “It’s like a “hail-fellow-well-met.” I didn’t work with a lot of the other guys because so much of it is like, “Oh, somebody flies in from this place for a week, somebody flies in from that place,” and then somehow we end up on screen together.” Nevertheless, he praises Marvel as “an extraordinary franchise, and I was really, really happy to be invited back.”

He was asked if he knew the scope of what Marvel Studios had in mind for upcoming MCU movies after being in The Marvels, Grammer stressed that “I had no idea. I think it was just sort of a nod to the fact that they were going back to a place that they all recognized as beloved.”

He was thrilled about how his cameo was received, saying, “The response to Beast’s little appearance in that movie was pretty substantial, and I was very flattered by that.” Grammer elaborated that “it just speaks to the character. He’s a wonderful character. He’s such a good man. It’s always nice to play something you believe in yourself.”

For Grammer, he sees Beast as a “man of great character, and I’ve always thought of him as the Martin Luther King of the mutant community – just a man of character and stature who will stand up for what he believes in, and he’ll pay the ultimate price if he has to.”

The veteran actor continued by saying, “That’s what I love about him. He gets in a fight, he’s slow to get embroiled, but once he is, he’s in hook, line, and sinker, and he gives no quarter and expects none, and this is the kind of person I want to be in my life.” The Frasier lead appreciates those elements, commenting, “So when you get to play it, it’s great.”

When asked about what he looks for in new roles versus ones he reprises, Grammer said, “Right? Yeah. I usually look for something I haven’t done before, but if it’s something – for instance, like Beast – getting to do that again is [an] inexplicable joy. It’s a presumed gift, and that I’m really, really excited about.”

The X-Men veteran added, “Other roles are just… I mean, there are a few pieces in my sense of criteria on this. It’s like, I need to make a living, I still do need to do that. So sometimes just getting a job offer is a nice thing because I’m a little short of cash. That’s how the world works.”

But mostly it’s: have I done that before? Have I done something similar? Well, maybe, but as long as there’s some other thing that pulls them into a different situation, I like it. This one, I was compelled to get involved because I like the nature of diminished play area. By definition it’s more stressful, it’s more likely to be a pressure cooker. And so stuck in that basket with four people—two completely crazy, two who are kind of sane—that’s pretty great.

The Avengers: Doomsday cast wrapped filming back in September, although it remains to be seen how many from the 2026 installment will be back for Avengers: Secret Wars. Principal photography on the Phase 6 finale will begin next summer.

The first trailer is reportedly arriving this month, which will give a better idea of the Avengers: Doomsday story, including how the X-Men fit into the arc.

Turbulence opens in theaters this Friday, December 12.
