YUNGBLUD is seeing out what has been an astronomical year with a new version of a song that has come to define it.
Dom himself has admitted that ‘Zombie’ was a song that he had in his back pocket for years, knowing that he needed to wait for the right time to share it with the world. And in putting it at the centre of an album like ‘Idols’, which subsequently topped the charts in the UK and allowed him to be as wonderfully himself as he has ever been, that patience has paid off in abundance. Paired with a video starring Florence Pugh, which has racked up 19 million views since its release, it is a piece of art that shows just how far YUNGBLUD has come over the last decade and how the project’s intent has expanded beautifully.
Where the album version crashes with emotional depth and towering walls of sound, the acoustic version lays everything bare, with just guitar and strings, making the heartwrenching words all the more moving. Every emotion encased is given the space to breath, with Dom clearly feeling all of them at the same time, his performance as intensely human as it is heavenly.
He had this to say about what the track means to him, sharing, “The song was written initially about my grandmother going through serious injury and trauma, leading her to become a different person to who she was before. It’s about the feeling of deterioration and ugliness; shutting out the world and the people we love out of the fear of becoming a burden or an embarrassment.”
