Sarah Drew Talks Motherhood, Mystery, and Making Holiday Magic in ‘Mistletoe Murders’

Sarah Drew is having quite the festive season. The former Grey’s Anatomy star, best known for her role as Dr. April Kepner, is now leading Hallmark’s hit holiday mystery series Mistletoe Murders, where she not only stars as the sharp and soulful Emily Lane but also serves as an executive producer. In the latest interview on The Breakdown with Bethany, Drew discussed stepping into a more hands-on creative role, raising tweens and teens, and how she keeps holiday magic alive at home.

Drew says taking on producing responsibilities was a natural extension of her love for storytelling. She was deeply involved in shaping the cast, providing script notes, and helping elevate everything from the romantic tension to emotional beats. “I love being a leader on set,” she said. “Creating an environment where people want to come to work feels like a sacred responsibility.”

As for Emily Lane, Drew relished playing a layered character who’s equal parts charming shop owner and reluctant sleuth with a secret past. Season two digs deeper into Emily’s history, complete with flashbacks that Drew called some of her most exciting work yet, and builds the slow-burn relationship between Emily and Detective Sam.

Off-screen, Drew is navigating familiar parenting territory: older kids with later bedtimes, evolving friendships, and big feelings that always seem to surface right before lights-out. She laughs about it, but also cherishes that they still come to her with everything. “That’s the good stuff, the delicious piece of parenting,” she said.

To stay grounded, Drew swears by hot yoga, calling it her “holiest” self-care ritual. And this holiday season, she’s savoring time at home, along with watching her son perform in A Christmas Carol.

New episodes of Mistletoe Murders air Fridays on Hallmark Channel, with episodes streaming the next day on Hallmark+.
