Roar suffer defeat away in Newcastle

Brisbane Roar suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Newcastle Jets at No.2 Sportsground on Saturday afternoon.

Sharn Freier showcased one of the first chances for Brisbane Roar after bulldozing through Jets’ defence and laying the ball off to Kijah Stephenson in the 24th minute. She received the ball back at the top and the box and rocketed an effort over the goal.

Melina Ayres opened the scoring for the hosts in the 32nd minute after receiving the ball in the box, taking a touch and striking the right side of goal.

Just before the break, Leia Varley took down Kelli Brown in the box to give away a penalty. Brown was the one to step up for it, and successfully converted the shot to extend their lead at half-time.

After returning to the pitch, Roar were determined to get themselves on the scoreboard but Jets defence were too strong on the day.

India Breier sealed the three points for the home side after an impressive shot from range proved too difficult for Chloe Lincoln to control causing the ball to fumble in her hands and roll into goal in the 71st minute.

Daisy Brown made her Ninja A-League debut in Newcastle and will be looking for more match minutes in the weeks to come.

Up next, Roar will face Sydney FC at Leichhardt Oval on December 28 after next week’s bye.
