Szoboszlai shines in slot left by Salah
The big news at Liverpool has been Arne Slot’s decision to bench Mohamed Salah, with Dominik Szoboszlai replacing the Egyptian on the right of their attack.
Szoboszlai has stepped up in Salah’s absence, finding the net in each of the Reds’ last two games. He was on target in last weekend’s 3-3 draw at Leeds United and then scored the decisive goal from the penalty spot as Liverpool won 1-0 against Inter Milan in the Champions League at the San Siro.
The Hungary midfielder has arguably been the team’s most consistent player this season, despite being used in several roles by Slot. He played as a right-back, central midfielder and No.10 before taking Salah’s role on the right.
Slot’s decision seems to have been based on a desire to provide more security for his defence, with Salah not offering much protection when out of possession. Szoboszlai is not only fulfilling that responsibility, but also delivering with his attacking output.
His goal against Inter was his third in the Champions League, in which he also has three assists. Across all competitions he now has five goals and five assists from 22 appearances.
When you consider that Szoboszlai has not had a settled role in the team, they are good numbers. He is Liverpool’s chief threat from set-pieces and may become the regular penalty taker now Salah is out of the side.
I’m backing Szoboszlai to either score or assist, at odds of 1/1, against a Brighton team who can often be open defensively.
