Don’t waste your time consulting the form book for a
steer on which way this might go… because neither AFC Wimbledon nor Mansfield can
claim to be in any sort of form right now.
The Dons have tumbled out of the top six after taking
just a single point from their past five games, while Mansfield – eyeing the play-off
spots themselves after a five-match unbeaten run at the end of October – have slipped
to 16th.
Nigel Clough’s side have lost four games in a row,
failing to score in the past two of those against Cardiff and Bolton, although
the FA Cup provided some relief as the Stags saw off Accrington on penalties to
advance to a third-round tie at Sheffield United.
It’s a similar story for Wimbledon, whose winless
sequence in recent weeks includes a 5-0 hammering at the hands of struggling Peterborough.
Again, though, the south Londoners found some solace
in cup football, stunning Cardiff with a 5-1 victory in the EFL Trophy, centred
around a four-goal salvo from Aron Sasu.
So the message seems a clear one for both teams –
treat this as a cup tie and you might just get your season back on track!
