Derrick Rahming named new Capitol Police colonel in Florida

Derrick Rahming has become only the second person ever to hold the title of Colonel of the Capitol Police, according to a Dec. 12 news release from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
The position was “created to provide strategic leadership and oversight” for the division, which “protect(s) the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Cabinet members, legislators and their staff, while prioritizing the safety of all employees working within the Capitol Complex and CCOC,” the Capitol Circle Office Center in Southwood.
“Since joining FDLE in 2024, Rahming has overseen key operational divisions and provided steady leadership during major incidents,” the release said.
“His background includes extensive service with the Florida Highway Patrol, as well as the Florida Army National Guard, where he demonstrated dedication to protecting communities and supporting fellow law enforcement officers.”
Rahming “embodies the professionalism, integrity and leadership that FDLE values,” FDLE Commissioner Mark Glass said in a statement. The police unit is under FDLE.
“His experience across law enforcement and military service ensures Capitol Police remains in capable hands as we continue our mission of safeguarding Florida’s Capitol,” Glass added.
Rahming will serve under Capitol Police Director Seth Montgomery.
