A 17-year-old girl fell 30-metres down a cliff at a lookout on Queen of Colonies Parade in Moffat Beach about 6.40pm (7.40pm AEDT) after reportedly jumping over a safety fence.
Despite the efforts of bystanders and paramedics, she died at the scene after suffering significant head injuries.
Another woman sustained minor injuries as she tried to help the teenager.
The rough terrain even caused firefighters to slip as they attempted to reach her.
Authorities warned visitors to stay clear of the fences when visiting lookouts.
“Especially this time of the year, but throughout the whole year, just please respect the barriers that are put in place,” Ryan Dubyk from Queensland’s Fire and Rescue said.
