Officials to hold news conference on shooting shortly
Brett Smiley, the mayor of Providence, will provide an update on the shooting shortly, according to a spokesman.
He will be joined by representatives from the Providence police and fire departments.

‘Situation is ongoing’, Brown says
Brown University said on its website a short time ago that the “situation is ongoing”.
“All members of the community should continue to shelter in place,” it said.
“We are very sorry to share that we have confirmed reports of multiple shooting victims, but we do not yet have information about their condition that we are in a position to share.
“They have been transported to local hospitals.”
The university also said it was working immediately to determine who was in the building at the time of the shooting.

Brown student hid for two hours
Brown PhD student Chiang Chin told local TV station WJAR he was hiding for about two hours in a lab after receiving a text about an active shooter a block away.
He said he was with three other students who decided to turn the lights off and hide under the desks.
“I was hoping no-one was getting hurt and no-one was dead,” he said.
“I feel like I was safe in the lab because all the doors are thick and the lights were off.”
He said he heard a loud noise by armoured police outside the lab after receiving a notification they wanted everyone out of the building.
He said police searched the lab and searched him before being told to leave — and he left so quickly he wasn’t able to grab a coat.

Brown retracts earlier statement about one person in custody
There was a little confusion earlier as to whether or not the suspect was in custody.
Brown had initially posted a statement on the university website that the suspect was in custody, but walked back on this after police said they were continuing to search for one or more suspects.

President Trump has been briefed on the unfolding situation
US President Donald Trump said he’s been briefed on the situation at Brown and that the FBI is at the scene.
“God bless the victims and the families of the victims!” he said in a post on Truth Social.

Where did the shooting happen?
The incident was reported near the Barus & Holley building, a seven-storey structure that houses the School of Engineering and Physics Department, according to the school’s website.
It includes 117 laboratories, 150 offices, 15 classrooms and 29 labs.
Officers carrying assault weapons and emergency vehicles lined many of the streets surrounding the engineering school.
Saturday was the second day of final exams for the fall semester.

‘Multiple shot’ in the area of university
Providence police said on X that multiple people have been shot near Brown University.
It did not disclose a number.
“Multiple shot in the area of Brown University,” police said about 5:33pm local time.
“This is an active investigation. Please shelter in place or avoid the area until further notice.”
Police did not immediately release details about the victims’ conditions or the circumstances of the shooting.
