Supermarket giants say Labor’s new rules will only drive up prices

The country’s two major supermarkets have warned that the Albanese government’s attempts at clamping down on price gouging is not only unworkable but will likely end up costing shoppers more.

In confidential submissions to Treasury, obtained by The Australian Financial Review, Coles said the introduction of limits on what the government describes as excessive pricing of groceries would cost millions of dollars that was “ultimately likely to be borne by customers”.
