LOGAN, Utah – The Idaho Vandals Women’s Basketball team fought tooth and nail on the road against Utah State, ultimately stumbling to a 73-80 final in Logan.
It was a slow first quarter for the Vandals, who struggled to find their rhythm offensively, being outpaced by Utah State 20-14 at the end of the quarter.
Idaho came storming back in the following period, however. Idaho came out of the gates with a 7-0 run, featuring five points from Kyra Gardner, to take the lead and force an Aggie timeout. The Vandals took their lead up to 26-23 before Utah State responded with nine consecutive points of its own to regain the advantage halfway through the second quarter. Idaho connected on a pair of three-pointers from Ella Uriarte and Ana Pinheiro, respectively, that served as a catalyst for a quarter-ending 14-6 run, as the Vandals took a slim two-point edge to the locker rooms, leading 40-38.
The two sides went back and forth, exchanging the lead several times throughout the third quarter, but the Aggies ended the period with a 57-56 lead heading to the fourth.
It was the same see-saw battle between the teams to start the final stanza. Pinheiro and the Vandals drew first blood, as the Portuguese international grabbed a defensive rebound and dashed the other way to lay it in for two of her career-high 18 points, giving Idaho the lead once again. Following an Aggie layup, Hope Hassmann connected on a triple to put the Vandals up by a pair, but from that juncture on, Utah State went on a 9-2 run that would give the Aggies control of the game, giving them the momentum they needed to defend their homecourt with an 80-73 victory.
