De’Aaron Fox Opens Up About Chris Paul’s Lasting Impact on the Spurs’ Young Core

The Los Angeles Clippers officially moved on from Chris Paul in early December. Los Angeles is now exploring trade options ahead of December 15, when Paul becomes eligible to be moved. If no deal materializes, the franchise is expected to waive the veteran guard, allowing him to sign with a contender as a free agent.
Although the Clippers’ relationship ended abruptly, Paul made quite an impact while he was in San Antonio with the Spurs. Recently, De’Aaron Fox also discussed Chris’ influence on his career during his short time with the Spurs.

De’Aaron Fox Details What Made Chris Paul So Valuable in San Antonio
During a media interaction, Fox emphasized that Paul’s reputation as one of the greatest floor generals in NBA history was evident in the way he approached his role, regardless of the circumstances. And the Spurs star also highlighted Paul’s impact on San Antonio’s young core group.
“He was great. He was a professional. He was a vet. As soon as I got here, he asked me what I wanted to do with the ball, what spots I like, things of that nature. Those are the things you expect from him. Being a veteran, being a person that everybody calls ‘Point God,’ I think he was great for this group. There were some growing pains, and I think everyone can see what he gave to the organization.” Fox said.
Paul signed with Los Angeles as a free agent in July 2025 after spending the 2024–25 season with the Spurs. His departure from the Clippers was reportedly driven by a mismatch between his vocal leadership style and the team’s environment, which management believed was becoming disruptive amid a bad start to the 2025–26 season.
Paul had accepted a reduced bench role, averaging limited minutes, but the fit never fully materialized. League sources indicated that teams remain hesitant to surrender assets, preferring instead to wait until Paul potentially becomes available on the open market.
As Paul weighs his next move in what is now his 21st NBA season, he appears at peace with the uncertainty ahead. In his first public comments following the Clippers’ decision, he expressed calm and openness about what comes next, noting that he remains excited to contribute in whatever role presents itself.
Currently, the Clippers are in the bottom two positions in the Western Conference with 19 losses and just six wins; they have yet to find consistency this season. Meanwhile, the Spurs are in the 5th seed with 17 wins and seven losses, and they will face the Oklahoma City Thunder on Saturday in the NBA Cup semi-final.
