Tulane Wins Four of Five

The Tulane Green Wave are coming off a game against a lower division opponent that they should have won by a bigger margin, but do not let that distract you from the positives this season. They defeated Boston College out of the ACC as 2.5-point underdogs, and have won four of their last five, except for a tough battle against Akron. They have played well in close games, as three of their wins came in games with single-digit spreads.

In their last game, they were led by Rowan Brumbaugh, who had 22 points and six assists in the win over Tougaloo. He is in his second season with the team, after beginning his career at Georgetown. Brumbaugh is a 6’4 junior guard averaging 19.1 PPG and 3.4 APG, leading the team in both categories. He is also their top outside shooter with 22 made threes. Curtis Williams Jr. is not far behind in that category, as the 6’6 junior has 21 made threes while averaging another 14.2 PPG and 5.2 RPG. Asher Woods is their final scorer in double figures; he is getting 11.9 PPG as a 6’3 senior guard.

Tulane is ranked 187th out of 365 Division I teams according to KenPom. They are 117th in offensive efficiency and 314th in defensive efficiency. They play at a slow pace, ranking 279th in tempo.

Tritons are off to an Impressive Start

The UC San Diego Tritons have an 8-1 record to start the season. Many large schools may have an equally impressive record, but then you realize they played a cupcake schedule. That cannot be said here, as every single one of their nine games so far has had a game spread of single digits. The Tritons have been winning close games, defeating Bradley, Temple and Fresno State when they were listed as the underdog in all three.

In their win over Long Beach State, UCSD got 18 points from Aidan Burke in the win. He is a 6’3 junior guard who has played his whole career with the Tritons. This season, he is averaging 11.4 PPG as a starting guard and is their top outside shooter with 22 made threes on the year. Their top scorer is 6’8 junior Leo Beath with 18.9 PPG to go with his 5.2 RPG. Beath did not play last year due to an injury and was with Florida Atlantic in the previous season. Beath also plays on the outside as he has 18 made three pointers. Tom Beattie is their top rebounder as just a 6’5 guard, but he gets 5.3 RPG to go with his 12.3 PPG.

UC San Diego is ranked 99th overall according to KenPom. They are 71st in offensive efficiency and 160th in defensive efficiency. They play faster than Tulane, ranking 174th in pace of play.

Spread pick for Tulane vs. UC San Diego

  • UC San Diego -5.5 (5 units)

Something is off with Tulane, as they just played a lower division team and only won by 12 points, while most D1 teams take those games by 30 or more. Tulane also lost to New Orleans in a game where they were listed as 11.5-point favorites. The biggest mismatch in this game will be seen when the Tritons have the ball; UCSD is ranked 71st in offensive efficiency, while Tulane is way back at 314th in defensive efficiency. UCSD has size and outside shooting that Tulane will not be able to match up with. UCSD is used to tight games; all of their games so far have had single-digit spreads, and they won eight of those nine. It will happen again here.

Take UC San Diego to win and cover.

Over/Under Pick for Tulane vs. UC San Diego

This is a neutral site game with no true home court advantage either way. An important aspect when looking as this game is that both teams are better on offense than they are on defense according to KenPom. Tulane is 314th in defensive efficiency; they cannot get stops at all. Even when Tulane has the ball they will have the advantage, as they are 117th in efficiency going against the 160th-ranked defense. UC San Diego has gone over the total in four of their last five games, and will go over again here.

Take the over.
