Shipperd confirms Abbott & Chohan to miss opener

Sydney Sixers coach Greg Shipperd has confirmed Sean Abbott along with English spinner Jafer Chohan will both miss their season opener against the Perth Scorchers on Sunday.
Abbott hasn’t played since sustaining a hamstring injury playing for NSW in the Sheffield Shield in mid-November.
He has returned to some training lately but Sunday’s game is too soon.
“No (he won’t play),” Shipperd told 91.3 Sport FM. “He did a hamstring in our Shield game along with Josh Hazlewood a couple of rounds ago.
“He’s working his way through that. It gives our wider base an opportunity to start the season and obviously Sean comes in and compliments our attack at that time.”
Shipperd also revealed Yorkshire leg-spinner Jafer Chohan won’t suit up in the Sixers’ opener.
“He’s not coming on the trip with us for this game,” Shipperd said. “He’s just a fantastic young bowler. Compliments our other spinners in the side, Davies, Murphy and Manenti.”
Shipperd also discussed the likely batting role of all-rounder Jack Edwards, amid suggestions he could bat either 3 or middle order.
“We’re still trying to work out in T20 cricket his exact role,” Shipperd said.
“Is it a Tim David type in the 5/6 spot or is it throwing him up the top and having crack like Mitch Owen. I think that’ll unfold in the coming season.”
Shipperd also confirmed cheapie fast bowler Mitch Perry will line up for the Sixers on Sunday.
“We’re thrilled with Mitch. With the loss of Jackson Bird to Hobart, it’s Mitch’s time,” he said.
“He’s going to get opportunity this year. That’ll be up front. He’s been bowling beautifully in Shield cricket and one-day cricket. We think he’s going to be a terrific player for us for a long time, starting out in this first game.”
The Sixers had a warm-up game on Thursday, with Shipperd flagging Josh Philippe as a standout.
Shipperd said: “Josh Philippe 89 not out off 20 balls was pretty exciting to watch. All of our other senior players scored some good runs. Hopefully they bring that into our first game.”
