Plans to ban the sale of diesel and petrol cars by 2035 were announced three years ago as part of the EU’s plan to be net-zero by 2050.

It would have meant that all cars coming on the market in 10 years’ time would have needed to be zero CO2 emissions – but this stance has now been softened.
