Spirit responds to competitors reportedly preparing for airline to collapse this weekend

DANIA BEACH, Fla. (WKRC) — Spirit Airlines has responded to reports that some of its competitors are preparing for the carrier’s potential collapse this weekend.

According to a report from The Air Current, at least two competitor airlines have made preparations for Spirit Airlines to collapse on its December 13 bankruptcy milestone.

Sources speaking to the outlet said those unnamed companies have accelerated plans to provide schedules to backfill any canceled Spirit Airlines flights, as well as offer rescue fares for the ultra–low-cost carrier’s customers who would otherwise be stranded during the holiday travel season.

The report further states that senior executives at airlines with less direct overlap with Spirit’s operations are also watching the milestone and reportedly believe Spirit will likely be unable to secure a vital capital injection.

Spirit Airlines responded to the outlet’s report and issued the following statement:

“There is no truth to any rumors that we are preparing to cease operations. It is business as usual at Spirit, and flights continue to operate normally. We are working closely with our debtor-in-possession (‘DIP’) providers and other key stakeholders on a wide variety of issues to support the financial needs and future of the business, as we have been throughout our restructuring process.”

The statement concludes by noting that the ongoing discussions “remain productive,” according to the report.

Citing Cirium’s Diio, The Air Current reported that Spirit Airlines currently has 428 flights scheduled on Saturday, December 13, and 3,138 flights scheduled through December 20.
