Newcastle United get James Trafford offer after £100m transfer interest emerges

The Magpies are set to snub any interest in one of their prize assets in January – despite a tempting offer
Newcastle United chiefs will resist interest in Tino Livramento from Manchester City again in January – with Eddie Howe making it clear to the club’s hierarchy he wants to build a team around the ex-Chelsea youth player.
Howe has underlined the importance of keeping both Livramento and Lewis Hall to sporting director Ross Wilson during early talks on squad strength. Livramento is admired by Man City but Newcastle warned off Pep Guardiola and co last summer with a warning that the defender was “not for sale”.
City have continued to track Livramento, but there is hope that he will sign a new contract on Tyneside to keep him beyond his 2028 agreement. But even if the Citizens do come knocking again in January for Livramento, they will be told only an “astronomical” offer would result in a conversation even starting.
That was also the case with Alexander Isak in the summer when Liverpool made paltry bids before being forced to part with £125m for his services. Livramento is a different case to Isak though and the 23-year-old wants to stay at United, leaving contract talks to his father and agent.
However, those on the recruitment circuit have spoken of City making an exciting package for Livramento which could include cash plus former Burnley keeper James Trafford. Newcastle tried to buy Trafford last summer from the Clarets and lodged a £27m bid for his services.
In the end, they were pipped by Man City who activated a buyback clause on the England squad member. Since then though Gianluigi Donnarumma signed for the ambitious Eastlands outfit for £30m and Trafford has been restricted to limited game-time.
Toon insiders say that even £100m may not be enough for the Magpies to part with Livramento.
Toon are talk of Europe these days – here’s why
After ending up on a bus full of Marseille fans after the recent Champions League clash at the Velodrome on the way back to the hotel, it was notable how many home supporters were discussing how good the Magpies were looking.
True, the Magpies slumped to a 2-1 defeat in France but one Marseille fan, after noticing I was English, commented: “That’s one the most exciting teams I’ve seen at the Velodrome. Livramento, Hall and Tonali, they are good to watch.”
For the second European away game in a row I ended up on a bus towards Leverkusen’s BayArena. And again the conversation progressed in similar fashion.
This time, Leverkusen fans spoke about how they’d watched on as Newcastle spent money on big signings and they expect United to get beyond the last 16. Bearing in mind Bayer Leverkusen are seasoned campaigners in Europe it was quite a compliment.
Newcastle wait for FA Cup decision
The Magpies’ home FA Cup clash with Bournemouth on third round day has not been picked for a TV appearance. It was not on the televised list issued on Friday.
But the date may still change with over 20 fixtures on third round day last season altered from the original Saturday slot. A Newcastle statement read: “All third round ties are set to take place over the weekend of Saturday, 10th January 2026. A confirmed date for the fixture will be announced at the earliest opportunity.”
