Saudi Pro League side Al Qadsiah are close to reaching an agreement with Brendan Rodgers to become their new head coach.
The 52-year-old Northern Irishman is travelling to Saudi as work continues to finalise a deal.
Rodgers has been out of work since resigning as Celtic manager in October.
Michel Gonzalez, the former Spain international, was sacked as Al Qadsiah boss on Sunday, with the club promising to “move swiftly” to appoint a replacement and ensure “a smooth transition”.
They met number of candidates from across the European game, in a process run by CEO James Bisgrove and sporting director Carlos Anton.
Rodgers’ experience of managing Swansea City, Leicester City and Liverpool, his record of winning trophies in two spells at Celtic, as well as his style of play and philosophy ultimately made him the preferred candidate.
Owned by Aramco, the majority state-owned national oil company of Saudi Arabia, Al Qadsiah are scheduled to move into a new stadium next season and wanted to make an appointment before the January transfer window.
Initially brought to Chelsea by Jose Mourinho as a youth coach, Rodgers began his career in the dugout with Watford and then Reading ahead of leading Swansea City’s promotion to the Premier League in 2011.
An 11th-place finish in the top-flight preceded a spell at Liverpool, where he did not win a major trophy but came within two points of champions Manchester City in 2013-14.
In five seasons in Glasgow, Rodgers won three Scottish titles, three Scottish Cups and a League Cup. The two titles he missed out on were by a margin of one point and by one goal.
His win rate of 75.5 per cent is the highest of any manager in Celtic history.
