2-Hour Delay Announced For Darien Public Schools On Monday

DARIEN, CT — Darien Public Schools will operate under a two-hour delay Monday, Dec. 15, due to potentially slippery conditions.
“The delay will provide time for road salt to melt any ice and for our facilities staff to put more salt down in the parking lots and walkways at the schools,” Superintendent of DPS Dr. Eric Byrne wrote in an email to families Sunday night. “The safety and wellbeing of our students, faculty and staff is our highest priority. Thank you and be safe.”
On Sunday night, the National Weather Service issued a special weather statement due to black ice concerns.
“Travelers are advised to use caution for areas of black ice through the Monday morning commute. Temps will drop well down into the teens tonight, with any moisture or slush on untreated surfaces quickly refreezing after sundown. Gusty winds of 30 to 40 mph may bring down additional snow laden tree branches through the overnight, with isolated power outages possible.
“In addition, wind chills will fall to around zero for the NYC/NJ metro and coast, and as low as 8 below zero across the interior tonight into Monday morning. At these temperatures, frostbite can occur in as little as a half hour on unprotected skin.”
