This game could make or break both teams’ postseason runs.
Thanks to their four-game winning streak, Miami’s gone from a likely top-five draft pick next April to firmly in the hunt in the AFC playoff picture.
Miami’s running game has come alive in recent weeks. The Dolphins have tallied at least 160 rushing yards on this winning streak which started with a win over the Buffalo Bills – a fellow wild-card contender in the AFC.
The ground game peaked last week in New York with 239 yards, the second-most in a single game in coach Mike McDaniel’s four seasons with the team. That’s complimented better turnover luck for the Dolphins’ defense; that unit’s tallied 10 takeaways in the last four games, compared to seven over their first nine.
Those Bills handed Pittsburgh a 26-7 loss in Week 13, putting the team at 0.500 for the first time since Week 2. The Steelers needed a win in a huge way and got it in Week 14 with their win over Baltimore.
Pittsburgh will be without star linebacker T.J. Watt due to a partially collapsed lung, which could give Miami’s passing offense time to perform. Even with Watt in the lineup, Pittsburgh ranks 27th league-wide in pass defense. De’Von Achane could take advantage as a receiver.
Rodgers could find more success through the air this week. Miami capitalized on turnovers during its winning streak but hasn’t slowed down many offenses outside of the Jets’ unit.
Another factor will be the weather with sub-freezing temperatures all game. That could tilt the game in Pittsburgh’s favor as Miami has historically struggled in colder games.
