Peter Wright reveals U-turn on iconic mohawk for World Darts Championship

Peter Wright said there was “no point” sporting his iconic mowhawk for the Players Championship last month as a result of being on stage two. The 55-year-old took to the oche at Minehead Butlins almost unrecognisable, sporting a slicked back bleach blonde quaff as opposed to his usual spiky trim.

And now, the Scot has explained exactly why he opted for a more low-key hairstyle on the night. Speaking to Online Darts, Wright said: “That was only in Minehead because I was on stage two and I know they only show the last three darts in your match, if you’re lucky. So there’s no point dressing up and having my hair done and everything.”

However, the two-time PDC World Championship winner explained calmed any worries that he will not be back to his usual ways for this year’s event at Alexandra Palace. He added: “I’ll still be Snakebite, unfortunately. I’ve created the monster and I’ve still got to stick with it.”

Wright will hope to roll back the years in the capital at the 2026 World Championship, especially considering recent form at the event. The Livingston-born star clinched his first world title in 2020 thanks to a 7-3 win over Michael van Gerwen in the final, before doubling down two years later with a 7-5 victory in a close-battled game with Michael Smith.

However, the World No. 30 says that 2025 hasn’t been the best year in terms of play. He explained: “I’ve been playing rubbish all year. All their eyes are on the two Lukes [Humpries and Littler] and Gezzy [Gerwyn Price], so that’s good.

“I’m surprised anyone wants to talk with Wrighty. I think I prefer that as well, to be honest. Obviously because I haven’t been performing, so really, the big names are not really looking out for me as a danger, I think.

“I can potentially slip under the radar and maybe upset a few. Obviously, I feel bad for all my fans, the way I’ve been playing and stuff like that and the expectation of playing really well at Worlds.

“If I get through the first round or second round, I normally do pretty good, so it’s just getting over them little nerves in the first round and I think I’ll do alright. I think I’ll do well.

“I’m looking forward to the match potentially with MVG [Michael van Gerwen] in the third round. Have a great clash with him. That’s the main target I’m looking at the moment, just baby steps. I’ve just got to make sure I turn up and play darts for two-and-a-half, three weeks. I’m just going to sneak round the back.”

Up first for Wright at the 2026 World Championship is a clash with Noa-Lynn van Leuven come Monday, December 12 at 3:50pm.
