Rangers are among a number of teams interested in signing out of contract Saint Etienne star Pierre Ekwah – according to a report.

Ibrox boss Danny Rohl has been promised he will be backed in the upcoming January transfer window as the club try to fix the mess left by sacked duo Russell Martin and Kevin Thelwell last summer.

The German will also be keen to offload players on the fringes of his squad. Record Sport has revealed that Sheffield United want to land midfielder Joe Rothwell just six months after he joined the Light Blues from Bournemouth while winger Djeidi Gassama is said to be wanted by Villarreal in Spain.

Saint Etienne signed central midfielder Ekwah on an initial loan deal from Sunderland in July 2024, activating their option to sign him on a permanent basis for €7million (£6.1million) last summer despite their relegation from Ligue 1.

However, the former France youth international – who spent time in the youth academies of Chelsea and West Ham earlier in his career – was reportedly unhappy with the decision because of his unwillingness to play in the second tier, and as a result has yet to feature this season.

The 23-year-old has terminated his contract with Les Verts but remains on furlough until the legal ramifications are sorted out. The Massy-born player was tentatively linked with Celtic earlier this year but reports in France now claim he is on Rangers’ radar.

FootMercato report that Gers and Serie A team Udinese are both keeping tabs on the situation along with an unnamed third club from elsewhere.

Ekwah started his professional career with Sunderland, scoring five times in 63 appearances in total before returning to his native country.

The midfielder stands at 6ft 2 inches and is also equally adept at filling in as a centre back. Ekwah is of Ghanaian and Cameroonian descent but represented France five times at U20 level having previously been capped for their U16 team.

Football runs through his family, with Ekwah’s cousin Paul-Georges Ntep – who retired last year after spells with the likes of Rennes, Wolfsburg and Guincamp – winning two senior caps for France back in 2015.
