Everything you need to know about Coronation Street’s Theo star James Cartwright’s life including famous dad

  • Coronation Street’s James Cartwright joined the ITV soap this year as Theo Silverton, the new love interest of Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce), and it wasn’t long before sparks started to fly between them. However, Theo’s true colours soon emerged as he began manipulating Todd for months, attempting to control every aspect of his life. Moreover, the abuse escalated to physical violence in heartbreaking scenes. Recently, terrified of what his partner might do, Todd installed hidden cameras in their home, with a powerful special episode airing on Monday night.
  • Away from Coronation Street, James is no stranger to TV, having had a role on the Tracy Beaker series as Nathan, The Archers as Harrison Burns, Downton Abbey as Tony Sellick and Father Brown as Jimbo Riley. However, it seems showbiz is in his blood as he has a famous father.
  • James’ father is the successful writer and dramatist Jim Cartwright. Jim has written a vast amount of work over the years, most notably the 1992 play The Rise and Fall of Little Voice, which was adapted into a film in 1998 starring Jane Horrocks and Michael Caine. Over the years, James has collaborated with his famous father numerous times. In 2009, he was cast in the West End revival of his dad’s play The Rise and Fall of Little Voice, taking on the role of Billy.
  • According to the father-son duo, James was the last of 30 hopefuls to audition for the play. Jim revealed to The Guardian: “I was so proud. I forgot it was him.” James then confessed: “My dad is my best mate.”
  • James also reminisced about his childhood with his famous father and recalled an incident when he was seven years old and attended a matinee of the original Little Voice. He shared: “At the cast picnic afterwards. I ate too much, stood on my head and was sick over Pete [Postlethwaite]. But seeing the play made me understand what Dad did. Until then, Dad was just Dad. He played football and scribbled.”
  • Fast forward to 2016, and Jim and James reunited for another play, a one-man show called Raz written by Jim and starring James. Speaking about collaborating with his dad again, James told The Times: “His writing’s in my blood, it’s rich and beautiful. I know what he means instantly.”
