Coronation Street viewers were quick to praise the most recent episode of the ITV soap. A powerful episode focused entirely on the relationship between Todd and Theo. Although viewers may have been frustrated by the outcome, the unique standalone episode offered an emotional message about what can truly happen behind closed doors.
Gareth Pierce and James Cartwright have taken centre stage in recent months as part of a hard-hitting storyline tacking the problem of domestic abuse in a same sex relationship.
Things have escalated in recent weeks in harrowing scenes which saw Theo smash Todd’s head into a mirror. The couple were forced to pay a visit to hospital, where Theo manipulated Todd into thinking it was his own fault. Other distressing scenes included Theo stuffing a kebab into Todd’s mouth, and even going as far as pouring a bottle of milk over his head.
Monday’s episode of the ITV soap took an even more disturbing turn. The entire episode was shown through the point of view of cameras such as Todd’s hidden camera, CCTV, dashcam, video doorbell and police bodycams.
A series of flashbacks showed what happened inside the flat on a terrifying night. Todd was trapped by his partner, locked in a room while he was battered. As the abuse that Todd has been suffering intensified to dangerous levels, the powerful episode saw the police descend on the street after a report of a domestic incident.
Taking to social media during the episode, some Corrie fans described the episode as a “hard watch”. The majority of viewers complimented the soap’s unique filming style which added to its eerie feel, as well as the acting skills of Gareth Pierce and James Cartwright in their heartbreaking portrayal.
On X, one said: “Some scenes were hard to watch and made me angry. Excellent acting from Gareth Pierce who plays Todd.” Another said said: “The actors who play Todd and Theo, did a FANTASTIC JOB! As much as this episode was hard to watch… they did a brilliant job”
More added to the conversation on social media said: “Brilliant how tonight’s @itvcorrie was filmed for tonight’s episode” while another added: “That episode of #Corrie was absolutely fantastic. The unique way the episode was shown made it even more hard hitting and heartbreaking. If that episode helps at least one person, Corrie has done its job.”
Another wrote: “I’m 15 minutes into today’s episode of #Corrie So far, it’s awful. I can’t stop thinking about how this is happening in homes across the world every day. Love how it’s been filmed. Bravo @itvcorrie and all involved.”
Another said: “Front door camera view = we never know what’s happening behind closed doors. This is clever.”
As the episode continued, the police were called to the flat by a concerned Bernie. Todd and Theo were taken to the station to be questioned by Kit.
Todd described the horrifying events as an “accident”, causing frustration among viewers who are more than ready to see the back of Theo.
In a huge twist, flashbacks saw Todd finally lose his temper and Theo fall to the ground. Todd shouted at his partner: “I don’t want to be with you!” before launching Theo into the Christmas tree.
They were rushed to the police station, while Theo was checked over after suffering damages to his head. But in a frightening ironic turnaround, it was Theo who was treated as the victim.
He was given endless amounts of support from George and Christina, as well as the policemen. He was even offered leaflets to help with domestic abuse, when it should’ve been Todd receiving the support.
Back in the flat, Theo discovered a camera Todd had hidden in the living room. With Theo knowing his truth could be revealed, viewers were left on a cliffhanger, wondering if the truth will ever come out.
Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX
