Wildcats Take Down #7 Dartmouth, 3-2, in OT

DURHAM, N.H. – Junior defenseman Brendan Fitzgerald (North Reading, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal in overtime as the University of New Hampshire men’s hockey team defeated No. 7 Dartmouth, 3-2 in overtime, on Sunday afternoon in the Whittemore Center at Key Auto Group Complex in non-conference action. 
 
 
Senior goalie Kyle Chauvette (Goffstown, N.H.) made 24 saves to earn the win.
 
 
Freshman forward Jacob Newcombe (Sambro, Nova Scotia) and senior captain Morgan Winters (Osprey, Fla.) also each scored for the Wildcats. Newcombe assisted on the game-winner for his second point of the night.

 
The Wildcats, who have won five consecutive games, advance to 10-7-0, while the Big Green fall to 11-1-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED:   

  • The Wildcats struck first at 6:18 when sophomore forward Cam MacDonald (Hammonds Plains, Nova Scotia) won the faceoff and sent the puck back to Newcombe, who blasted a shot into the top-right corner of the net for his fifth goal of the season.

  • Nathan Morin tied the game at 8:26 of the second period for the Big Green when he knocked in a rebound from the top of the crease.
  • UNH regained the lead 2-1 when junior alternate captain Marty Lavins sent a pass from the right to find Winters who fired a shot from the top of the left circle into the back of the net. Junior forward Nick Ring (Hingham, Mass.) also posted an assist on the goal.

  • With two minutes left in the third period, Dartmouth tied it up when Ryan Schelling found the back of the net off of a rebound to push the game into overtime. 
  • At 2:29 of overtime, Newcombe won the puck in overtime, sending Fitzgerald on a breakaway where he scored the game-winning goal.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:   

  • UNH outshot Dartmouth, 34-26.
  • Each team went 0-2 on the power play.
  • Chauvette posted 24 saves for the Wildcats, while Croteau made 31 saves.

  • The Wildcats are the first team to defeat the Big Green this season as Dartmouth was the last team to be undefeated in the nation.
